What's in a name

So as I am going through my old blog I use on blogger.com, I realize that I didn't blog on when or how I came up with the name Steffy Jewels. That's the thing, once you know that you want to become your own boss, you gotta know where to start. I will be completely honest. I had no clue on where or who to reach out to in this journey. I was a single mom at the time and I didn't know anyone close who had their own business I could reach out to. Sure I talked to my mom for advice and guidance but outside of her, where do I go? Well in the words of my favorite character, Hermonie, there's a lot you can learn from books (and internet)!

I knew back in 2015, I wanted to make make jewelry and for the first couple of years, I went on learning the design side of Jewelry Making. Its funny as I really don't wear it. I'll be honest, in the type of work I do for living (working in the accounting department), depending on the industry, wearing earrings or bracelets were uncomfortable. Now, if Ii'm going out, I love wearing jewelry. but to work, nah.

So in finding the right name for your business, you got to know what type of business you want to get in and then you gotta ask yourself the most important question, Is this going to be a hobby or a business? I knew that I wanted to make it a business as I had a bit of jobless moments and I wanted a job where I know, no matter what, I couldn't be let go due to downsizing or whatever. That's the beauty of starting your own. You are the boss!!

So in choosing the name for my jewelry business, I knew I wanted it to be catchy but not cheesy. I want to say that I decided on the the name, Steffy Jewels back in 2016. I like how jewels can be anything from jewelry and beyond. Even at this time, I knew I wanted the name to stand the test of time and be able to involve as I do. Not to mention, its a nice play of the initials of my name, S and J.

Then on 8/4/2017, I made the name legal in the state of Texas. I got by DBA which is good for 10 years. This is very important part of securing your name. Once you find a name and its available, register it with your state and by all means, grab all the social media platforms for it. This means, twitter, YouTube, Facebook, etc...Also, and this is really really important, before you register your name, make sure that the platforms are available and if they are grab it, and then, grab the domain name for it. You don't want to register your name just to find out that you can't get the domain (website) for it later. I grab my name back in 2016 and in 2019, I finally got the website.

In future posts, I will talk further more on how to start a business or at least the part I was able to figure out. I don't know all of it but to get where I am today, I had to do a lot of leg work in research what I needed. I don't pretend to be an expert but like I said earlier in this post, I didn't know where to go or who to ask. And most individuals would want to charge you a small fee just for this knowledge. Well I might not give you everything as it was very time consuming in getting this myself, but I can at least point you in the direction on where you can go to get it. You know, save you some of the work in digging in the dark web for it as we all know, the WWW is full of helpful and useless information.
